WASHINGTON — Sen. John Cornyn of Texas has joined Republican senators calling for a Senate Judiciary Committee investigation into Donald Trump Jr.’s business dealings and relationships with foreign individuals, including questions surrounding financial support for celebrations connected to his recent wedding.

The development comes after Sen. John Curtis, Republican of Utah, sent a three-page letter to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and ranking member Dick Durbin requesting an investigation into Trump Jr.’s foreign business relationships, gifts and other financial benefits.

Curtis argued that the committee should examine whether relationships involving members of a sitting president’s family could create expectations of favorable treatment or provide foreign interests with access or influence.

Among the issues cited by Curtis was reporting that Russian businessman Umar Kremlev helped finance portions of Trump Jr.’s wedding celebrations in the Bahamas. According to reporting by ProPublica, Kremlev paid for the rental of a private island and a fireworks display associated with the wedding festivities.

Trump Jr. and his wife, Bettina Anderson, have described Kremlev as a friend. Anderson previously said that Kremlev had generously hosted celebrations for the couple following their wedding. Donald Trump has also defended the arrangement, saying his son had repaid Kremlev.

Curtis’s letter also pointed to Trump Jr.’s involvement in family-backed cryptocurrency ventures, international real estate activity and reported financial or advisory relationships involving prediction-market companies. Curtis said those matters warranted congressional scrutiny because of their potential connection to federal regulatory decisions.

Cornyn Says He Supports the Request

Cornyn, who serves on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he supports Curtis’s request.

“I would support Senator Curtis’ request,” Cornyn said, according to CNN and congressional reporter Laura Weiss of Punchbowl News.

When contacted directly by Mediaite to confirm the report, Cornyn responded, “True.”

North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, another member of the Judiciary Committee, also indicated that he would have no objection to an investigation. CNN reported that Tillis described the reported wedding arrangement as raising serious questions while noting that the committee would need to determine how and when such an inquiry could proceed.

The proposed investigation would examine both Trump Jr.’s business relationships and his interactions with foreign individuals and entities. Curtis specifically requested that the committee consider subpoenas concerning business dealings, foreign relationships, gifts and other benefits received by Trump Jr. and Hunter Biden.

The Political Context

Cornyn’s decision comes months after he lost the Republican nomination for his Senate seat in Texas to Attorney General Ken Paxton.

President Donald Trump endorsed Paxton shortly before the May Republican runoff. Paxton subsequently defeated Cornyn, ending Cornyn’s bid for another term in the Senate.

The timing has drawn attention because Trump had supported Paxton during the primary contest against Cornyn. However, Cornyn has not publicly characterized his support for Curtis’s investigation as retaliation for the primary.
