The competition on America’s Got Talent Season 21 (2026) has entered a brand-new phase after NBC introduced the Judges’ Callback Round, a format never before seen on the American version of the show. Instead of moving directly from auditions to the Live Shows, several talented performers have been given one final opportunity to impress the judges before the field is narrowed to just 44 acts.
This year’s judging panel features Simon Cowell, Mel B, Sofía Vergara, and Howie Mandel, while Terry Crews returns as host. After hundreds of hopeful performers auditioned, approximately 100 acts received enough “Yes” votes to remain in contention. However, only 44 performers can compete in the Live Shows, forcing the judges to make some difficult decisions.
Unlike previous seasons, the Callback Round allows each judge to personally mentor a selection of acts before making their final choices. Rather than performing on the familiar AGT stage, contestants meet the judges in unique locations, creating a more personal environment where performers can receive direct coaching and perform again under different conditions.

The new format adds extra pressure for contestants who narrowly missed earning a Golden Buzzer but still showed enough potential to remain in the competition.
According to NBC, ten acts have already secured automatic Live Show spots through Golden Buzzers. The remaining places will be filled after judges carefully evaluate performances during the Callback Round. The change gives contestants another opportunity to refine their acts instead of relying solely on one audition.
Each judge is also joined by celebrity guests during mentoring sessions, bringing additional experience and feedback. This season’s mentors include musicians, comedians, and entertainers who help contestants polish their performances before final selections are announced.
For viewers, the twist creates more suspense because favorite acts that seemed eliminated now have another chance to earn a coveted place in the Live Shows.
